2nd Grade Presentation- Our Heritage

Our Visit to "La Caban au Sucre"

Today in School, Grace and Andrew are learning about where their parents come from. Since we have pictures and songs and stories from Quebec, I wanted to bring a little heritage from the North to Florida! Looking back at our visit to Quebec, spending time with my aunts and uncles, cousins, and Grandma Cecile, I have very wonderful memories. I enjoy every minute when I'm there, even if it is cold enough to freeze the St. Laurence River!

These photos and videos were taken March 2009, the year I turned 30! I am bringing some children's songs in french like "Frere Jacques" and "Monte Sur an Elephant" and I am bringing my two children's book that are in french, "Le Magasin de Jouets" and "Le Grand Cirque". And I am making crepes drizzeled with real maple syrup for the kids to taste.

Bountiful Garden

Devon has built a garden spot for our family. He's pretty handy to have around the house...

Devon, the kids and I planted seeds for FHE in March, and we've been able to enjoy the yield from this garden. The kids love to see things grow, and so do Devon and I. We planted corn, lettuce, spinach, onions, carrots, peppers, green beans, bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peas. We were impressed with our first garden ever! Can't wait to do it again.

What happened to the bloggers?

Obviously I haven't posted in a while. Sorry about that! It looks like none of my friends or family have posted lately either. You're all tweeting and texting, aren't you?
The Coles of Wisconsin are doing fine here in Florida. Same ole thing. Devon works, kids go to school, and I hang out. We'be been doing a few projects around the house. Other than that nothing really interesting. Except...
did you know a month ago Andrew broke his arm? Yes. That was interesting. Time flew by though, and he's getting it off on Friday, so no problem! It was relatively an easy healing process, considering his broken leg and his sliced finger from previous years. The best thing that has come out of it, is that he can't suck his thumb now so he's broken the habit. The worst thing is that he's a bit smelly. We give him baths and wipe him down daily-but he's a little boy from Florida running and playing and picking up bugs and playing in dirt which to leads to sweat and body odor. It will be most awesome when I can throw him into the bath and clean him up properly!
Other news:
Happy Birthday to my Brother Erich. He will turn 30 tomorrow. I haven't seen him and his family since Matt and Lisa's wedding-and I wish I could be there in Erie to personally wish him a great year and spend time with his cute family. I love you guys! Have a great birthday, Erich!

Matt's birthday was on the 20th of April. I was lucky to have him and his wife Lisa at our house the weekend before his birthday so we took him out for some "southern" cooking. Ribs and cornbread. We went to Sonny's. It was pretty good-I would definately recommend the restaurant to you if you like ribs and slow-cooked meat. The salad bar didn't look appetizing though. Matt and Lisa brought their new puppy Max. Not to the restaurant, though. He is so cute! Matt is doing a good job of training Max. He has learned sit, stay, down, fetch, shake paw, lie down. He has lots of energy and gets excited around new people. The kids loved him of course.

The last thing I'll say is that I've entered into a local biggest loser contest. I joined with a bunch of friends from our church in Gainesville. I think it will be fun and motivating to work with a bunch of people with a goal in mind. And since I've got a ton of weight to lose (not literally of course!) I think I may have a good chance at winning! If I stay consistent of course! I'll keep you updated on my progress. The competition starts Monday May 3rd and runs for 16 weeks.

Christmas has come and gone

It has been a while since I've written. The kids and I have enjoyed a nice break from school and now we're all back in the swing of things. We have experienced some cold days here in Florida, but today is a sunny, warm day and it will continue to be for the rest of the week. Some fun things we were able to do over Christmas Holiday are:
1. Go swimming at our community pool
2. Visit the beach and Great-Grandma & Grandpa Scuralli
3. See "A Christmas Carol" in 3-D
4. Read our friends' and families' Christmas letters and cards
5. Visit the Festival of Lights (reminds me of the time I went to Thanksgiving Point with my friends, Jaime and Crystal)
6. Attend the Ward Christmas Party (Dinner and "lip-sync"ing contest)
7. Play with friends
8. Talk with friends and family on the phone and Skype

Faye turns 9

Faye turned 9 last week. She had some friends over for a birthday party. We played some fun games, had dinner and fondue for dessert, and we played karaoke. She got a new wii game called Disney Sing It! The girls had a blast. It was fun meeting all of Faye's friends, everyone was polite and fun to hang around with. Of course there was alot of girlie screaming and running around....but that was just me! Ha ha! Here are some photos. Not of me running around, but of Faye and her friends.

Andrew looses a tooth

I've been enjoying everyone's new posts on their blogs, I thought I'd take a minute and update my own. Check out Andrew's new look. He lost his bottom tooth a couple of weeks ago. It was wiggly and became totally loose after he knawed on some corn on the cob. He happily pulled it out in the car one night, and showed everyone his tooth. He is very pleased with his new image. He can wait to loose another.

card making is fun and relaxing

Our home has four bedrooms. Two bedrooms in each wing of the house. The kids bedrooms are in the opposite wing of our bedroom and the fourth room. Originally, the fourth room was to be my craft/sewing room, but at the last moment we converted it into a bedroom for visitors and or as a homework area for Faye. It has a queen size bed, end tables, a desk and a large walk-in closet. You're probably wondering why I'm mentioning this and how it is relavent to card making, but it is precisely because of this closet that this story begins.

This closet has become the multi-purpose storage area for our junk. It is where I have stashed all of our storage items including, seasonal clothing, decorations, tax files, water jugs, crafts, kids papers and of course my scrapbooking supplies. I can barely walk into this closet as it is so full of stuff. Last week Iwas in need of a card for a baby shower and as my cards are in this this closet, I began to rummage through baskets, boxes, and storage bins. I couldn't find anything anywhere in that closet! Finally I pulled out my scrabooking box from the shelf with some difficulty and started to go through it. Since our move from Wisconsin, my scrapbooking box has become a jumbled mess, with every thing out of order and papers all mixed up. So I took some time last week to go through my box, and finding matching paper and putting everything back in the right place. The bed was covered in papers for days. It was during this organizing project that I came across some paper that my sister-in-law had made for Provo Craft.

Tina is a very talented and creative artist, and she has been a professional scrapbooker for the last decade or so. I came across this paper and wanted to use it to make some cards. It is so funky and fun, it was really great making these cards with paper she designed! What do you think of them?

Organizing my paper really got my creative juices flowing and inspired my recent ideas. Tina has also inspired me to look at things in a new way and be as unique as only I can be. Thanks Tina!

I used Tina's paper in the "Oh Baby!" and "Cute as Can Be" cards and in the "Thanks" card in the second photo. Card making is lots of fun and can be very relaxing. You should try it some time.

first day of school was two months ago

I'm only now posting "first day of school" photos. I took these pictures of the kids back in August on the first day of school. The second photo displayed was taken in our front yard as we were walking to the bus stop. As you can see from the photo, it was still dark when we left . We had to wake up at 6am to catch a 7 am bus. What you see covering the grass in the background is not frost, but dew from a very humid 80 degree morning. Can you imagine it being 80 degrees BEFORE the sun rises? The first photo is of the kids getting on the the bus for the first time. It was a monumental moment for the kids so I thought I should honor it by taking a photo.

The kids were very anxious about taking the bus, especially Faye. But all nerves were settled when they saw that several of their friends from church and the neighborhood rode the bus too. So now that makes riding the bus fun and exciting.

One disastrous thing that occured that first week is that Faye left her brand new glasses on the bus on a Friday. When they were returned Monday morning, the bus driver sadly told me that some kids got to them and completely destroyed them. I was so upset about it, not only because cost us money to replace her brand new glasses, but that school kids could be that destructive. I would post a photo of them, but I'm so over it now and Faye has a better pair of glasses, the ones she is wearing in the previous photo.

So that is the sad story of the lost broken glasses and first day of riding the bus.

The next post I want to show you some cards I have made recently. I wanted to display them because the paper I used in some of them was made by my talented and beautiful sister-in-law Tina. She is so creative!

Faye hasn't let me take a photo of her with her new glasses on, but as I was downloading photos from the camera onto the computer this evening, I saw a picture she took of herself with her glasses on. I thought I'd share it with you all. She is absolutely adorable with them on, don't you agree?

We drove to the little town of Williston last weekend, to get haircuts for Andrew, Devon and Grace. It was Grace's first haircut at a real salon, and she loved it! Here is a photo of her new bob.

We are all learning to love Florida, and we are busy with homework, and playing with new friends, and getting to visit some new places here in Gainesville.

We are also getting to meet new people from church and are enjoying our calling as Primary teachers. We teach the 5 year-olds. Now, we are getting ready for the Primary Sacrament Program. Faye, Grace and Andrew have speaking parts, and are learning their parts quickly.

This month Devon is busy working in the trauma department. It is very busy for him and for the first two weeks they have scheduled him for nights. He is also studying for the Step 3 Board exams which he will take in November.

I have been looking for an online job to supplement our income, as well as volunteering at the kid's school, and becoming a Girl Scout Leader for Grace's Daisy Troop. I have also volunteered to manage the cookie fundraiser in March again (what was I thinking?) for both Faye's troop and for Grace's. We'll see how that goes.

We have all enjoyed the weather here in Florida, and I feel that the best is yet to come. Everyone who lives here says that the winter months are very pleasant, and I am looking forward to it!

Butterflies!

I've noticed on several occasions that there are lots of butterflies here in Florida. I would look out the kitchen window and see monarch butterflies as big as my hand fluttering around the flowers. It is truly remarkable. There is an exhibit at the UF Museum of Natural History about butterflies. I took the kids and one of Faye's new friend to the museum on Monday. There we learned alot about the life cycle of a butterfly and had alot of fun, too. Here are some photos from that day. Sonia XXOO

Fun in Florida

We finally got internet and phone set up at our new house in Florida. Since Devon has been so busy, we still haven't put up pictures on the walls yet. When he isn't on such a time-consuming rotation like PICU, then we'll work on decorating the inside. So that's why I haven't posted any new photos. The kids and I have been able to explore our new area, though. My sister came to visit and we went to the I-75 Flea Market in Ocala, Florida. We went on Friday so it wasn't as busy as it usually is on the weekends. I found a retro-style pattern for a nurse's uniform for $.50. So I want to make it for my halloween costume. Then we took a trip to Itchitucknee Springs located 20 minutes to the Northwest of us. We went tubing down the river three times. The kids had so much fun, and so did my sister and I! Then, last weekend we drove down to Orlando to attend the Orlando Temple. It is a beautiful temple! Another couple in our ward watched our kids at a local park while we went and then we switched so that they could go. Then, I went to see a friend from high school, I hadn't seen in 12 years! It was so great to visit. She and her husband were so much fun to hang out with, along with their four kids. I can't believe we didn't take a photo of us all, but we did have a great time. I will make sure to bring our camera for our next visit.
There is lots of shopping close by. There is this great store next to Target called Rack Room Shoes, and I found a pair of Clarks sandals on sale for $20! I was so excited about my find. I got another pair of strappy sandals for my brother's wedding in September. Can't wait to wear them!
I am busy putting together my kids school registration forms. I can't believe they start August 24th. Summer has gone by fast. We have spent most of our days sleeping in, hanging out at home and swimming. We are all enjoying the hot weather here in Gainesville, Florida. Well, until next time, Sonia XXOO

Facebook

I have learned to share photos on Facebook recently and I just posted several albums that I know my family in Utah would really enjoy seeing. The photos include our visit to Mantua Lake, the Tree House Museum, Fran's Birthday Party, The Dinosaur Park, the Smart Family Reunion, Swimming with the Gregory's, and our visit to Preston, Idaho. I have yet to organize and put titles into each photo, but its a work in progress. There are about 120 pictures that I took over a month's time! Looking back, the kids look so young and that was less than a year ago!

So now that I into Facebook, I'm less likely to post on this blog. I know-how rude of me right? But if you haven't already set yourself up an account on Facebook, there's no time like the present to do so.

Family Tree Project Finished:Wall-Worthy?

So, several days ago, before the rush of Girl Scout Orders were due (I'm Faye's Girl Scout Cookie Leader) and before my first-ever Beauty Control Party (Yes, I am a new Consultant), I went to my friend's house to finish a project that has been unfinished since June. I had all the materials I needed, but couldn't get the creative juices flowing. I worked on getting my family' names neatly penciled in the leaves while enjoying my friends' company. I didn't finish it for another few days. Still, after everything I am unsure if I like it or not. My friends like it. I really think it looks too home-made for my taste. I'm wondering if it's still wall-worthy. What is your opinion? Take the poll now. Sonia XXOO

Glass House Mountains, Nutworks and Brisbane, Australia

Well, there were so many more photos I wanted to show that I decided to break them up into a series. Last week I showed you photos of the Koala Sanctuary. This time, I have photos from the hinterland, a place up in the mountains that separate the Gold Coast from the Western Australia (the bush). It is beautiful and where you'll find dairies, quaint little shops and a rainforest. Pretty amazing.

We are with Lynn and LuAnn Cole, Devon's parents and they are the couple who made this trip to Australia possible for us for two reasons. One, they were serving a mission in Australia for the LDS Church at the time, and second because they wanted us to come see them. We missed each other and it was wonderful to experience the best of Queensland. They took us around to see the sights.

One of our favorite places to visit was Nutworks, a macadamia factory. We tried so many kinds of flavors of macadamias there and I bought a recipe book too. One thing that caught my attention was the cool way they recycled the outer macadamia shell. They used it as mulch in their landscaping. I thought it was really creative! There is also a photo of the city of Brisbane. It is just beautiful. It was taken at the top of Kangaroo point where the LDS Temple and Institute is situated. What a wonderful place to gaze upon the city, don't you think? If I ever figure out how to get a video up and running, I would show you the "flight of the fruit bats." At twilight we got to see them up in the air, getting ready for their nightly feast. Very cool. I do love bats.

Some Photos of Australia

So I thought while we're in the thick of winter, I'd show some photos of our trip to Brisbane, Australia from last year where it was hot, sticky and absolutely fabulous!!!! When I look out of the window here in Wisconsin and see four feet of piled up snow, I just close my eyes and imagine myself in the thick of the rainforest again and smelling the gum trees and holding Orien, my koala. I hope you can imagine it too with these photos. There was so much more that I did there that I can show you, but here is just a "taste"

Faye's Birthday and Baptism

Hi Everyone!

Well Faye turned 8 years old last Monday and was baptized last Saturday!

For her birthday, she invited some friends to join her for a dinner party. She requested meat fondue. The girls followed our rule about hugging and kissing everyone at the table if a piece of meat stays in the pot. They thought the objective to hug and kiss the most so there were lots of lost meat, to say the least. And lots of love!

Then on Saturday, Faye was so precious in her baptismal gown! Her Father and I are so proud of her. I was very nervous about giving a talk on Baptism, but I felt the Holy Ghost so strong when LuAnn (Faye's grandma) gave her talk on the gift of the Holy Ghost.

I could see the joy in Faye's face after she came up out of the water and we quickly changed her into her dress. On Sunday, Faye was welcomed into the church as the newest member of the Milwaukee Ward. I can already notice a change in her behaviour since.

She is getting so big! She has been reading her new scriptures that her grandparent's gave her for her baptism and is really enjoying them.

I am feeling very good about our time here in Milwaukee. It doesn't matter how cold it is outside or how much snow falls, my heart is warm from the friends I've made here in the midwest. Thanks to all of you who made this baptism special. Not only for Faye but for our family. You are wonderful!!

Faye's Baptism

Hello Everyone! I thought I'd show you the finished invitation for Faye's Baptism. My good friends Laura and Martha helped me to design and execute my idea. Thanks, girls for your creative genius.

I am sad to say that my parents won't be able to make it to Faye's baptism in a few weeks. My dad is undergoing some major heart surgery and will be unable to travel as he will be recovering. I pray for him and mom every day. I hope that his operation will go safely and restore the strength he has lost due to a weak and clogged heart. I also hope he has the opportunity to restore his eyesight through surgery at some point-a complication of diabetes. We wish you a speedy recovery. I love you Dad.

On a lighter note, Devon's parents are coming for a visit and I am so thrilled to have them here! We all are, in fact. I have a few more weeks to get my house in order for visitors. Faye's baptism will be here in no time. Already I'm late in sending my invitations. Hopefully she will be surrounded by friends and loved ones to help support her on her special day. I want it to be something she'll remember for her entire life.

Halloween 2008

Hi All!

Faye Grace and Andrew had a blast this Halloween tricking and treating. I made Grace and Andrew's costumes of nurse and ninja, but bought Faye's vampire-empiress dress online. They got good use out of them wearing them to the Ward Halloween party, the school costume parade, and our neighborhood trick or treating night.

While I was away, Devon and the kids carved some pumpkins, but we discovered that they spoiled when we returned. So yesterday aftrnoon, I helped the kids carve new jack o'lanterns. Grace said she wanted "star eyes" on her pumpkin; Andrew wanted a "vampire" pumpkin and Faye designed her own face. They turned out great, I think. Hope you all had a great Halloween.

What has happened in the last 2 months?

I can't believe it has been so long since my last entry! One minute I'm in the thick of school and the next minute we're half-way through the summer! But you know what, in my defense, I have been really REALLY busy. Let me tell you what has happened in the last two months, in an abbreviated fashion....

Devon is now a 4th year medical student. Yippie! He is working at St. Joe's Hospital, doing obstetric anesthesiology. He really likes it. AND he was hired on as a Resident Assistant at Froedtert Hospital shadowing resident anesthesiologists. He gets to do that once a month for a year. Then, if he stays in Wisconsin for Residency, he gets paid for his work there. Of course, if we move, he doesn't. Good incentive for staying, right???

Devon and I are also very excited about going to Utah for an away rotation in Cardiology. He gets to work at the same hospital as his brother, Chad. Although how much they will see each other, is questionable. He will have weekends off to spend with his parents, who he misses very much. As for me, I get to spend lots of time with them, which makes me pretty lucky. And all the kids are so excited to visit their grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, and even see their newest cousin, Jonathan! Congrats to Lisa, Darren and Elizabeth Cole, by the way. We are so happy for your newest addition!

One thing about Devon's schooling, he was gotten busier over the years, or maybe just more tired, because we have spent less time on the rental house, so projects we had anticipated having done, have been left undone for so long. It is horrible! We have accumulated junk in our garage that needs to be organized and several little projects that need to be done as well. Luckily the college we rent from does the big stuff, like putting in a sub-pump so that our basement doesn't flood, and changing out our toilet pump so our toilet doesn't overrun and flood the basement...

Yes our house is old and has great character, and many many many issues...

After being the room parent for Faye's class, I thought a great summer activity would to start a Kid's Cooking Club. As a room parent, you plan the school parties, find helpers to assist the plans, and donations to supply the parties, and then carry out the plan. Well, the KCC went the same way. Parents, dropped -off their kids at my house, and brought supplies for our meals. And most important I had a parent who volunteered to run the KCC with me. Luckily she has been the best helper ever, Shelli Boome. She is a friend of mine with three chefs-in-training herself. We have cooked with several kids from church and friends from school and swimming class, and Faye really enjoys it! This next Thursday is our LAST meeting for the summer. I sent the kids home with an assignment. They will bring their completed cooking "project" with them on Thursday and together we'll serve their moms. The kids have learned lots of different things including following a recipe, measuring, cooking temperatures, identifying different spices and cooking tools, cooking safety and cleanliness and etiquette. How much they have retained, I don't know. They will each receive a cookbook at the end, that they can take home and use. Cool huh? Faye loves cooking and she is the reason that I started the KCC, even though its a lot of work and preparation, it is definitely worth it.

I have been watching Isaac V. and will watch him until the end of July. Then we will go to Utah, and Isaac's mom will stay home with him and wait for baby brother to be born. We are excited for him, but also sad that we won't be watching him every week anymore. Faye said that she wanted to see Isaac grow up to be a big boy, and I thought that was sweet. Grace always wanted to change his diaper, even though I never let her, she helped me get wipes and help close the new diaper on him. She loves babies! Andrew liked being a big brother and helping Isaac get toys and help him wash up after snacks and such.

I am still cleaning church buildings. It doesn't pay much, but I really enjoy cleaning, because it keeps me active, and I feel like I'm contributing to our community. I take pride in how a building looks after I have cleaned it. Sometimes, though I have to come home and take a nap, because it can be exhausting work. Also, I do wish the members would take pride in the building as I do, and do better in cleaning up after themselves. In September, I will start cleaning another building for the church and continue cleaning for Martha, so that Faye can start piano lessons again. I love that deal! I may take on another residential cleaning job as well, because I could use the extra money. The one drawback to cleaning so much outside the home is I don't care to come home and clean at my house anymore. I'm just so tired! Funny huh?

Since the kids will be in school full time I still will have time to do some things I've been looking forward to for a long time like exercise, go to institute classes, sew, and take a couple of classes. One about digital scrapbooking, and the other about hairdos. I have also joined weight watchers in an attempt to eat healthier, form good diet and exercise habits and loose some weight! It is a constant struggle for me, and I know I need some help. So if you see me (especially if I'm chewing on a big piece of cake), please ask, "how's WW going?" I could use your support to help me do a difficult thing. Thanks in advance.

Faye Grace and Andrew are a joy to be around. They have been enrolled in summer school since June and will attend until the end of July. They have all been taking swimming classes as well, and I hope that they continue in Utah as well. There is a pool near their grandparents house, that offers a two-week swimming class. The kids would love to swim everyday. I hope to do laps at the same time as their class, to work on endurance and strength. I love swimming and I'm so glad my kids do to!

Devon and I took them to Wisconsin Dells a couple of weeks ago. They absolutely LOVED it and can't wait to go back. We may take them in the winter when its off season, so cheaper. They loved the indoor pools and slides, although we took Faye and Andrew down a ride called the Hurricane. It was really frightening and Faye was really upset because we convinced her it would be okay. It was not okay. Her bum got stuck in the tube and she was really freaked out. She told me afterwards she'll not ever go on that ride again. The lazy river is more her speed. Grace would be the one to really like the ride, but she definitely was too short to ride and was very disappointed that she did not get to go on it, and her brother and sister did.

Then we took them to Door County to stay at the Myse Family's cabin and they had a blast there too. We all did. They took us boating and to the beach, cooked a terrific meal and shot off fireworks. It was so wonderful! They are still talking about it a week later. I still feel my sunburn a week later, too. You would think that at 29 years old I would know better to put a shirt on and sunscreen when being outside in my bathing suit for 6 hours? My legs have never seen sun in almost three years and therefore as fair as a ghost! Oh well, I've finally peeled and with the help of my kids got lots and lots of lotion on my back.

So there you go! I hope you've enjoyed getting caught up with the Cole Family of Wisconsin. My goal: Write an entry every Sunday. That way it won't be so long as this one.

Moments

I have some random photos taken from the last week or so. The kids and I have been busy. Now that the weather has warmed up for us, we have been out and about. One of the outings we have taken was to the Stevenson Farm in Brookstone, WI. It was a beautiful day and there were sheep and goats to watch and feed dandelions to. We went with our friends the Townsends. The kids had TONS of fun. and so did I.

We also went to Trina's 30 Birthday party. It was so nice of her to invite us. I have a photo of her blowing out her musical candle. Even though the wind was blowing and getting cold, the pool was warm and my kids were the last to get out. They loved it!

I also went to a little mother's day program put on by the JK class at Wilson. Muffins with Mom. They sang songs and played a slideshow of the kids. I'm amazed at how big they've grown since the beginning of the school year. I hope you enjoy the photos, I know I did.
